Australians planning an Easter getaway will spend an average $1,700 on holiday fun this year, with rocky road trips and hot crossing state borders among the most popular options according to Compare the Market.*

A third of Australians surveyed said they had booked a getaway, with about 18% of those people mapping out a road trip,14% hopping interstate, and 13% jumping on a plane to travel overseas.

Many of those lucky enough to get away say they’ll be doing it on the cheap, with 20% of holiday-markers budgeting $1,000 or less for Easter activities.

About two thirds of Australians (64%) said they would give the holiday a miss this year – caught up with other commitments or choosing to work through and take a break at a cheaper time.

But Compare the Market travel expert Catriona Rowntree said even Aussies staying put could find plenty to do with a small budget.

“In Australia we have much to be proud of and our cultural tourism is a force to be reckoned with,” Ms Rowntree said.

“Remember, for children, it’s all about activities. They are not impressed with fancy hotels – they want to be with you, they want to have experiences, they want to create life-long memories and that shouldn’t have to cost a fortune.

“In Melbourne they are the proud home of the Australian Ballet. Not only can you take a dance lesson there but you can be inspired by some of the most talented dancers in the world.

“The Sydney Opera House is known for its on stage productions, but I highly recommend taking a behind the scenes walking tour as well. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for open air cinema experiences happening around the city centres too.”

Catriona’s top tips for saving on Easter travel

Live like a local

Remember, you don’t need to eat every meal at a fancy restaurant. Head to the local grocer, pack a picnic, embrace the concept of BYO (keep it legal) and head out to a beloved location. Look for accommodation that offers a kitchenette so you can eat in and make your own teas and coffees. It’s a great way to save and cater for fussy eaters!

Save on accommodation

When looking for accommodation always prioritise safety and convenience over luxuries. Check and see whether forgoing a bathtub or buffet breakfast could lead to savings.

And whatever you do, don’t touch the mini bar! It’s always overpriced.

Feel empowered to save energy

TVs, microwaves and coffee machines can use power while on standby. Make sure you turn off any appliances you won’t be using at the connection point before you go on holiday to avoid electrical mishaps or a shock with your next energy bill.

Protect your plans

Is there anything more stressful than something going wrong while you’re on holiday? Travel insurance is just peace of mind for things like lost or stolen luggage, weather events and unexpected cancellations. If you’re planning a domestic roadtrip, travel insurance can help to cover your hire car excess should you need to claim.
