Australians looking to satisfy their sweet tooth this Easter are in for a shock, with new Compare the Market research revealing that the price of common Easter treats and snacks are up around 10% on average compared to last year.
The research comes as the Prime Minister promises a crackdown on supermarket price gouging if he’s re-elected in May.
Compare the Market compared the regular retail price of a shopping trolley of 15 Easter favourites this year – ranging from chocolate Easter bunnies and eggs to seafood, hot cross buns and soft drinks – to what the identical products cost last Easter.
On average, shoppers will spend $18.60 more this year for the same 15 items – a 9.65% increase compared to Easter 2024. Some of the items saw an even bigger increase, including:
- 200g Lindt Easter Gold Bunny: 28.5% increase (+$4)
- Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate Easter Bunnies: 20% increase (+$2)
- Humpty chocolate egg: 18% increase (+$1.5)
- Brioche Fruit Hot Cross Buns: 16% increase (+ $0.80)
Thirteen of the 15 Easter shopping basket products have seen a price increase compared to 2024, while just two items – the Darrell Lea Easter Bilby and Woolworths’ Easter Mini Dessert Selection – remained the same price. None of the products analysed have gone down in price.
Compare the Market’s Sarah Orr said parents had a right to be cross about the cost of Easter bunnies, while managing price pressures from all directions.
“There’s not going to be a lot of wriggle room in the budget this Easter with price tags on some popular treats jumping up to 28%,” Ms Orr said.
“While an extra dollar here and there might not seem like much, it all really adds up at the checkout. We know the average Aussie spent $212 a week on groceries in March. That’s about $21 or 11% more than they were spending early last year.
“Production issues and supply shortages for ingredients like cocoa have had an impact on pricing. But when the difference between brands can be so significant, it’s still worth hunting for a better deal.”
Worryingly, it’s not just chocolate prices on the rise, with other favourites like seafood, soft drinks, bacon and even the humble Hot Cross Bun set to cost more in 2025.
“Sniffing out cheap and cheerful options can help you avoid an overly ‘eggspensive’ Easter,” Ms Orr said. “You may be able to nab a bargain by trying home brands or lesser-known labels, that still taste great without the expensive packaging.
“You can weigh up whether an Easter bunny or an egg is going to give you the most bang for your buck by looking at the unit price, displayed in smaller print under the item price.
“Also remember that some insurance companies, energy retailers, utility businesses and even roadside assist programs also offer some shopping discounts. Check and see what perks may be hiding right under your nose.”
