‘Cats’trology – The most common star signs for cats in Australia

Cats are curious by nature, but is it also written in the stars? To celebrate International Cat Day on the 8th of August, Compare the Market has found the most common star sign for our four-legged furry friends.

In fact, the pet insurance comparison site found that it was Capricorn cats that turned out in ‘enor-meows’ numbers to take the crown, while Libra and Scorpio cats were the second and third most common, respectively.

“Given the data, it’s not all that surprising to see Capricorn cats take the lead. We know these feisty felines are born between 22 December and 19 January, meaning these kittens make perfect pets for people who decide to get a cat over the end-of-year break,” Compare the Market’s Executive General Manager for General Insurance and pet insurance expert, Adrian Taylor, said.  “Furthermore, these owners get to bring home their new family member in the new year when things have settled down a bit and people are back in a more normal rhythm after end of year activities.”

However, we see a decline in the number of cats born between 21 June and 22 July, or under the Cancer constellation.

According to Compare the Market’s data, the most and least common star signs for our cats for this year are as below:*

Mr Taylor said that no matter what star signs cats may be born under, they’re known for getting into hairy situations.

“Cats are curious creatures, and no matter if they’re a fierce Aries or an attention-seeking Leo, they’re known for pouncing at any given opportunity,” Mr Taylor said. “And while these actions could be considered cute, sometimes, they could end in a ‘cat-astrophy’.

“Emergency vet bills can easily be thousands of dollars, depending on the trouble your cat may have found itself in, from broken bones to eating something poisonous. And in the current economic climate where every dollar of the household budget is important, I don’t think there are many people out there with hundreds or thousands of dollars to spare.

“This could leave people between a rock and a hard place of either choosing to take on credit card debt or perhaps making a choice no one wants to make.

“To avoid getting ‘cattitude’ from your furry friend, one thing that can help take away some of the financial shock, is to get pet insurance as soon as you get your kitten. In some cases, cover can be cheaper than the cost of a cup of coffee a day, and it can insulate you against unexpected vet bills.

“We know that cats can be agents of chaos, and no two days with them will be the same. And as any pet owner would attest, you would do anything for the welfare and happiness of your pet. But while you’re looking after your cat, consider looking after your wallet as well.”
