A new study has ranked over 400 cities across the globe to see which are the most dangerous in accordance with their user-submitted crime ratings spanning the last six-and-a-half years.
The home and contents insurance experts at Compare the Market Australia revealed that South American cities dominated the crime index, with four cities from South America in the top 10. In comparison, Australian cities generally saw a much lower crime index rating.
Canberra has placed as the nation’s safest city, with a crime index rating of 26.8 out of a possible 100, ranking as the 49th safest city globally. Following this, Adelaide and Hobart placed as Australia’s second and third safest cities, with crime index ratings of 32.8 and 33.7, ranking as the world’s 92nd and 100th safest cities, respectively.
New South Wales’s capital city, Sydney, followed closely, sitting in 104th global position with a crime rating of 34.1, beating out Brisbane, which saw a rating of 36.9 and a ranking as the 121st safest city globally.
Melbourne saw a further fall in rankings, with a crime index rating of 43.8, earning the city a placement on the list at 171.
Conversely, Townsville topped the index as Australia’s most dangerous city as voted by users, with a crime index rating of 61.8, the 58th most dangerous city globally.
Moving further north, Papua New Guinea’s capital city, Port Moresby, placed among the top five cities within the index for crime rating, with a crime index rating of 81.2.
Executive General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, notes the importance of home security measures no matter what city you live in, and how they can affect your home and contents insurance premiums.
“Security systems are an important measure for reducing the risk of home break-ins, even if you’re living in a safe neighbourhood,” Mr Taylor said.
“Simple things such as bolstering your doors and windows can go a long way toward deterring any would-be burglars.
“Having these added layers of home security can even reduce your home and contents premiums, depending on your insurer and the specifics of your policy.
“In the unfortunate event that your home is burgled, it’s important to ensure your home and contents sums insured are adequate to ensure any claim settlements are not reduced due to underinsurance.”
