Sydney families looking to splash cash on showbags at this year’s Easter Show are in for a royal saving, with new research from Compare the Market revealing it’s cheaper in many cases to buy a bag at the show than it is to purchase the same items at the shops.

Compare the Market crunched the price of items in 15 popular bags available at this year’s Showbag Pavilion vs what the identical products would cost at the supermarket. Eleven of the bags were cheaper at the show, three were an equal price to the supermarket, while just one bag in the analysis was more expensive.

Compare the Market’s Sarah Orr said bargain hunting families may be pleasantly surprised when they hop to the Easter Show.

“A day out with the family is a calendar highlight for many households but we know money worries can spoil the fun,” Ms Orr said.

“The good news is, with a bit of research, you may actually find there’s good value at the Showbag Pavilion. But not all savings are equal. Do some number-crunching before you go to get the biggest bang for your buck.”

In one case, the Darrell Lea Classics Showbag, there was a 170% cost difference between the Easter Show and buying the same items at the store. That equates to a cool $25.50 in savings to spend on rides, dagwood dogs or carnival games.

The Life Savers Sherbet Showbag also does more than satisfy your sweet tooth, coming in around 67% cheaper than the grocery store – or a saving of about $10.

The Kinder Bueno bag was another surprise, costing 39% less at the show and leaving an extra $7 in your pocket.

However, savings aren’t always guaranteed. The contents of the Hubba Bubba Bag, Skittles Bag and Big Kit Kat Showbag in our analysis were equal in price to the supermarket, while the items in the Junior Red Ripperz Showbag were 7.14% cheaper at the supermarket.

“It’s been an expensive few years for families so it’s great to see some better value options on offer,” Ms Orr said.

“You may be able to buy multiple bags at a discounted price or hunt for bags that come with keepsakes like toys, backpacks and water bottles that the kids will love. It’s also a great opportunity to stock up on products you can only find at the show, like the infamous Bertie Beetle.

“Supermarkets may also run specials on popular showbag goodies like chocolates, lollies, chips and biscuits, so consider making your own show bags if the saving is bigger somewhere else.”

Ms Orr said there were other ways to save if you’re heading to the Easter Show in 2025.

1. Purchase tickets online. Early bird show tickets are available online now at a discounted price.
2. Consider an unlimited ride wristband. Revellers heading to the show on 11 April can purchase an unlimited ride wristband, giving them unlimited access to rides in the Gong Cha and Sushi Hub Kids Carnivals. There’s also a two-for-one special on some rides on 22 April.
3. Buy an After 4pm ticket. If you’re only interested in night-time entertainment, you may be able to save by purchasing an After 4pm ticket.
4. Travel on public transport. If you have a ticket to the show, this will entitle you to free travel to and from the show between 11 April and 22 April. Simply flash your ticket when travelling.
