Young Australian drivers, aged between 18-26 years old are found to be among the most reckless and least insured on our roads. That’s according to a new study by Compare the Market, in which more than 3,000 respondents from across Australia, America and Canada were surveyed.
- New survey reveals 20.4% of young Australian drivers reported having no comprehensive car insurance
- Of those surveyed, young Australian drivers the most reckless
- Majority of car mishaps on the road found to be minor fender benders
The study found that Australia housed the most reckless young drivers, with 36.5% of drivers surveyed, aged between 18-26, being involved in an accident in their own car – a big leap above young drivers located in both America and Canada.

Alongside this, young Australian drivers also came in as the least insured across the three countries surveyed. In fact, Australian drivers as a whole were the least insured, with a comprehensive insurance rate of 83.6%, marginally less than America and Canada.
In general, car accidents tended to be minor, with the vehicles involved requiring little to no repairs to continue being roadworthy. The USA came out as the leader of the survey for cars being written off, with 23.7% of car blunders resulting in the involved cars being unusable.
Compare the Market’s Executive General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, notes the importance of car insurance to ease the potential financial pain associated with car accident repairs.
“Anything can happen on the roads, so having car insurance can provide peace of mind when driving,” Mr Taylor said.
“While important for helping drivers after a car blunder, depending on your insurer and the terms of your policy, comprehensive car insurance can also cover your vehicle for storm damage, as well as towing and car hire among other things.
“Be it comprehensive or just third-party cover, car insurance is important to consider when buying your next car.”
