Your health fund may have agreements with certain dentists

With extras dental insurance, you’re free to visit any qualified dentist of your choice. However, your health fund may have preferred dentists they’ve made an agreement with. This can mean more transparent pricing, reduced costs and, in some cases, even gap-free treatment.

Make sure you understand the limits that apply

The amount you can claim for dental work will depend on your policy. Some cover a percentage of your treatment costs (up to an annual limit), while others provide fixed-dollar benefits. The percentage option may work in your favour for expensive procedures.

Be sure to understand what your policy covers

No one wants to take out a new policy only to find out they’re not covered when they really need it. When comparing health insurance products, make sure you understand not only what categories are included but what these categories actually cover. If you’re finding it confusing to figure out what dental services are covered by major dental, endodontic and periodontic treatments, chat with one of our experts. They’re here to help!

What is wisdom teeth removal?

Your third molars, better known as your wisdom teeth, are located at the back of your mouth and tend to come through during your late teens or early twenties.1 Your wisdom teeth may need to be removed for any of the following reasons:1,2

  • Tooth decay
  • Risk of tooth decay or gum disease
  • Serious infection or multiple cases of gum infection
  • A wisdom tooth has grown out too far
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing issues including infection, pain, cysts or ulcers
  • Your tooth is in an awkward position that makes it difficult to clean
  • You have a cyst or tumour around the tooth, or it’s causing jaw problems
  • An orthodontist needs to remove the wisdom teeth to make room for other teeth.

Wisdom tooth removal is a standard procedure that can be performed by a dental specialist, such as an oral surgeon or a maxillofacial surgeon. 2 Usually, upper wisdom teeth are easier to remove than lower wisdom teeth.

What is the cost of wisdom teeth removal?

Like most surgeries, the price of a wisdom tooth removal will vary based on numerous factors. Many dentists advertise prices for removing a single wisdom tooth and for removing all four of these teeth. The price of removing a single wisdom tooth can range between $150 and $900+.3 The cost of removing all four wisdom teeth ranges from $650 to $3,000+.

These prices are average estimates drawn from a limited number of clinics and shouldn’t be considered quotes. Complex wisdom tooth removals can exceed the prices we’ve mentioned, so talk to your dentist about your procedure for a more accurate idea of costs.

Some of the key things that will influence the cost of your wisdom tooth removal include:

  • The complexity of your surgery
  • Any additional healthcare costs (e.g. consultation fees, anaesthetist fees, x-rays, follow-up appointments, antibiotics, pain medications, etc.)
  • Location of your dental clinic
  • How many teeth you’re having removed
  • Type of anaesthetic you require (e.g. local anaesthetic, general anaesthetic, conscious sedation, etc.).
