Popping the kettle on, taking a shower in the morning or putting your phone on the charger: we take these daily activities for granted, but they each use up valuable energy.
So, where in the world is it most expensive to carry out these essential everyday tasks? To estimate just how much these household activities might cost in each country, we’ve taken average energy prices around the world, as well as the average energy used to carry out some common tasks.
Of the countries that we looked at; Slovenia was the most expensive to power appliances. In Slovenia, an eight-minute shower will cost you $0.37 on average, which is $0.25 (63%) more than the cheapest country, Turkey.
The appliance that costs the most for a single use is the tumble dryer, which uses up 2.4kWh. Over an hour-long cycle, this appliance can cost you from $0.64 in Slovenia to $0.21 in Turkey.
And, while it’s something that we all do at least once a day, it turns out that charging your phone doesn’t actually cost that much. This task uses just five watts per hour, which, for a two-hour charge, works out at a minuscule $0.002 on average.

We estimated the above energy costs by multiplying each appliances’ kilowatts per hour (kWh) by the average cost per kWh in each country as of 2019, (sourced from World Bank); this gives the estimated cost to use these appliances over an hour. Then, we use this figure to calculate the cost for a single use of each appliance.
